Finally the horse speaks
To friends and relatives, friends of friends and friends of relatives, and also those who simply came forward out of the mist and then retreated, anonymous yet caring: Thank You, your support, kind words, flowers, well wishes, and good thoughts have been invaluable to me.
I felt like the beloved of the poet Rumi when he expressed the depths of his caring: ' I love this giving myself to you, or to anyone who knows someone who knows you'
I have embarked on a strange and wonderful journey, into myself, and into the realms of what is possible. I have met amazing people and made wonderful friends, and the journey is just beginning. 11 months ago, I faced a choice: to die, and to see what lies on that side of the curtain, or to live, and have a radically new experience of life. Not for one part of one moment have I regretted my choice or wished I had chosen a different option. This has been more profound than I would have ever dreamt; so many people given the condition of paralysis lose heart, become upset, or spend time regretting their condition: this is not me. As such, I have something to offer, this has been a wonderful part of my journey, to share joy from a place where it is so unexpected.
11 months ago, I found myself unable to move at all, maybe my head just a little. Tubes coming out of my mouth prevented me from even attempting to speak. There were expectations that I would die. I and those close to me knew otherwise. From the first moments I have been determined to challenge the status quo and recover completely from my spinal cord injury. Since then, I've met those who came before me, those who also refused the dogma (Pat Rummerfield for one), and are now walking, or on their way to it. With all of the help that I've received, this is now the path that I "walk".
Today, I have begun to sit up on my own (a sign of muscles active in my lower abdomen, indicative of neurological return in the lower thoracic area of my spine, impossible according to the previous diagnosis), to use my arms more, and to experience feeling coming back into my body. My recovery is going well. Thanks to the amazing staff and method At Project Walk, who match my intensity towards resolution. Even now, less than one month after it was posted, the video of my recovery found on my web site: www.kabirkadre.com seems to me archaic and out of date. Recovery from this type of injury tends to be very slow when it happens at all, my improvement since the video amounts to little more than increased balance (better abdomen control), more consistent blood pressure, and more energy in my work. Though from where I sit, these improvements amount to a great deal.
Now, thanks to voice-recognition software, I am able to communicate via , and to reach all of you directly to say thanks. Thanks for tuning in, thanks for pitching in, and most of all thanks for being there. As much to my family as to me you have each and everyone of you been a great support.
With love and gratitude,
Kabir
PS: As my energy has returned and my fluency has increased in the operation of the computer by voice, I have begun to work at great deal more on the computer. I'm very excited to share with you all the very rough beginnings of a web site which I hope will support and further the work of all those involved in Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) recovery: www.SCIrecovery.com is barely more than an idea, though thanks to the immeasurable help of my longtime friend David Foltz, it already appears infinitely more. In fact, any Christmas shopping you may choose to do at Amazon.com, please do through our web site, as we will receive sales commissions which will help to support the further development of SCIrecovery.com!
Having barely begun, my work on this web site project has been more than bountiful in its rewards. Through the current news links on that page I have already begun communication with people in England who are achieving success in spinal cord injury recovery as we speak. This is just a small taste of the overwhelming joy I have received from working on this project. I would more than welcome any input or comments you may care to make on that work. My is always open.
